TEXTURE
Statement Of Intent.
1. What Is The Theme.
The theme I am looking at for this first project is Texture. In year 10 we are mainly looking at man-made and natural textures and identify the details within these textures, taking a variety of different photographs on these points. I believe that man-made and natural is a great contrast of choices and helps the website and photo's look different and stand out. Man-made textures are textures made by people, these include: metals, cars, wool and cotton. Natural textures include: Grass, bark, flowers, water, bricks, and some foods. To show my work I have a professional photography website called Weebly where I upload all my photos with ease. What I aim to do is to prove what I am capable of, to the best of my ability in photography. This is to substantiate my skills within this topic 'Texture' and allow me to achieve a higher grade when working hard.
2. Which Artist/Photographer Are You Going To Research And Why?
For my Initial Research, I am going to be focusing on texture photographers and. One of my favorite texture photographers is Aaron Siskind. The reason I am going to be researching him is due to the fact that I truly admire his work and how much detail he puts into his photographs. For example ,His black and white wall photo has so much detail and depth to it. I think that he is very different to many other photographers as he provides photos with different textures, thus creating the image to look more 3d and appealing to the eye.
3. What Are Your Initial Thoughts
At first my initial thoughts of the theme texture was taking basic photos such as feathers, bricks and food. However after doing more projects I have come to realize there is a lot more to texture than you would expect. For example man-made and natural are the 2 main focuses on this topic and they allow you to portray your images with different contrast, giving you a variety of things to work with. Photography is not just about taking photos it's also about the experience and journey you take, coming from learning to use a manual camera, to going on trips and to different and different locations to take creative and exciting images. I think the theme texture allows you to take photos everywhere you go, because everywhere you go there is texture, therefore allowing you to create a selection of photos with different contrasts using the topics man-made and natural.
4. What Photo-shoots Do You Intent To Complete
I plan to begin with studio shots taking pictures of food such as fruit and Vegetables. After this I could extend my thoughts further and begin to catch natural textures that you can find outside. I desire to proceed to do an area shoot in Padley gorge where I will actually went to catch pictures of water, trees and the pre-winter colors This could assist me with advancing in photography by giving me a decent eye to know how to take great photographs with various settings and different lighting and points. I could use my thoughts significantly further by trying different things with various settings like white balance and sports mode. I could begin to have photograph shoots and have a go at catching artificial textures. By doing this it would take my photography ability up a level. I could take my thoughts considerably further by going out all alone to take photographs. This will allow me to be really creative and have that nose for quality.
5. How Are You Going To Experiment
I will be using the Standard lens that comes with the Canon DLSR Camera, Tripods and also lighting stands as I do not have access to more creative options, most of my Experiments will be done in Photoshop. However using all of these will allow me to be really creative and to extend my ideas further, I will go out more to take photos and be imaginative with everywhere I go. This will therefore uplift my grade and allow me to take really fascinating photos, and not being restricted in what I do. These photos will go in the my own work section of my weebly website.
6. How Will You Show Your Progress?
The manner in which I will show my advancement is by utilizing my site to make a particular section for progress. This will permit me to analyze my shortcomings to accordingly assist me with working on my learning, therefore adjusting my flaws in future up coming photoshoots.
7. What Do You Hope To Learn?
There are a great deal of things that I desire to learn and one of these things are :
Learning more camera procedures. The explanation of why I desire to learn more camera procedures, is because of the explanation being that it will permit me to advance my work further and it will give me more information on the most proficient method to utilize a manual camera, in this way permitting me to exploit various settings, to generally make a further developed and better photo.
Something else I desire to learn is the technical high level side of photoshop. This is because it will allow me to dominate the rudiments of utilizing a photograph altering program. I imagine that I genuinely should learn photoshop more inside and out, the reason being is that it will assist me with turning out to be more expert with photographs and assist me with building my site.
Also I likewise desire to figure out how to make sure to use all the camera channels on iPhone. This is vital as photographs will look extremely tasteless and Still. In this way, making way making an amateur picture. At last I want to learn last to utilize more last exhibition pictures. What I mean by conclusive exhibition picture is the point at which the picture has been cleaned and altered to the best. This will permit my site to subsequently look much more expert and more interesting to viewers.

This is a Texture image consisting of a cabbage and a black background. The lights are going from a light focus, contrasting with the shadows, to create a light and dark image, therefore revealing more detail to the cabbage. The photograph looks fairly new as it seems as though it has been taken on a newer piece of technology due to the high levels of detail portrayed in the photo, being the contrast between the lights and shadows. This type of effect is not usually present on older cameras. The photograph has low amounts of colour, being only black and white present. However other may argue that if you look very closely at the cabbage, there is a hint of grey, blending in with the whites coming from the light and shadows, but it is very faint. There is a shot of jet black for the the background, and present within the shadows of the cabbage, which contrasts to the image entirely as the focus is manly Lights and Darks, giving a clean look to it. The fact that people are not present in this image gives a sense of focus as it allows you to be observant on only the object in the middle, being the main focus of the image. Clearly rule of thirds has been utilised in this photo as the object in the middle is the sweet spot, making it the most significant part of the image. the photographer has seemed to have taken the image at the regular eye level, therefore making the cabbage seem as though it has a lot of detail. It is also evident that a tripod has been used as the shadows of the image look very clean, which is clear that a slow shutter speed has been used to create this effect, a slow shutter speed only works on a tripod. This use of this camera technique has made the photo look more dark which greatly contrasts to the lights of the image. The photographer may have used photoshop to perfectly blend the deep blacks, lights of the image. This allows the viewer to be more focused on detail, rather than other things. Overall this photo reveals more detail than anything else and is done significantly well as it draws the viewer to be only observant at the centre rather than the sides, it does this well by creating a contrast between the black and the white colours to clearly identify the main focus of the image.

Edward Henry Weston was born March 24, 1886, in Highland Park, Illinois. He spent the majority of his childhood in Chicago where he attended Oakland Grammar School. He began photographing at the age of sixteen after receiving a Bull’s Eye #2 camera from his father.
Weston began experiencing symptoms of Parkinson’s disease in 1946 and in 1948 shot his last photograph of Point Lobos. In 1946 the Museum of Modern Art, New York featured a major retrospective of 300 prints of Weston’s work. Over the next 10 years of progressively incapacitating illness, Weston supervised the printing of his prints by his sons, Brett and Cole. His 50th Anniversary Portfolio was published in 1952 with photographs printed by Brett. An even larger printing project took place between1952 and 1955. Brett printed what was known as the Project Prints. A series of 8 -10 prints from 832 negatives considered Edward’s lifetime best. The Smithsonian Institution held
the show, “The World of Edward Weston” in 1956 paying tribute to his remarkable accomplishments in American photography. Edward Weston died on January 1, 1958 at his home, Wildcat Hill, in Carmel, California. Weston’s ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean at Pebbly Beach at Point Lobos.

What I appreciate in this image is its simplistic design. The focus of the image is right there in front of you which helps you to see all the textures within this photo. I really admire how the background is black. This helps create a beautiful contrast between the white cabbage and the black background. This therefore allows you to identify all the textures within the cabbage, thus reinforcing that technique in my work.

This is a Texture image consisting of a black and white Brick wall and shadows which are portrayed around the image. The lights are going from a light focus, contrasting with the shadows, to create a light and dark image. There is more bricks present in the foreground, which appears to be less of a focus due to the position of which the photo has been taken, allowing you to be more observant of the bricks directly in front. The photograph looks fairly new as it seems as though it has been taken on a newer piece of technology due to the high levels of detail portrayed in the photo, being the contrast between the textures, lights and shadows. This type of effect is not usually present on older cameras. The photograph has low amounts of colour as there are mainly just black and whites for the bricks. However other may argue that if you look very closely, there is a hint of grey from the colour of the cement lines but it is very faint and not very noticeable due to the high amounts of light being shone. There is a shot of jet black of the shadow, and present in the corners of the room, which contrasts to the image entirely as the focus is manly Lights and Darks, giving the photo a vignette. The fact that people are not present in this image gives a sense of isolation but quietness as you feel alone, making the bricks detail more noticable. Clearly shallow depth of field has been utilised in this photo as the bricks slowly fade away as the picture gets more blurry to the back. you could argue that there are leading lines in the photo as the bricks lines stretch out to the back which draws you towards the end. Another factor to add to this idea of leading lines is that the photographer has seemed to have taken the image a lot below the regular eye level, therefore making the lines seem as though it stretches out further. It is also evident that a tripod has been used as the shadows of the image look very smoky, which is clear that a slow shutter speed has been used to create this effect, a slow shutter speed only works on a tripod. This use of this camera technique has made the photo look more dark which greatly contrasts to the lights of the image. The photographer may have used photoshop in order to perfectly blend the deep blacks, lights and blurs, of the image. This allows the viewer to be more pleased when looking at the photo.

AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHER
Born: December 4, 1903 - New York, New York
Died: February 8, 1991 - Providence, Rhode Island
Aaron Siskind's early work as a social documentary photographer is best seen in his contributions to the Harlem Document (1932-40), a survey of life in Harlem. Siskind also identified with the ideas and styles of the Abstract Expressionist artists in New York in the 1940s. In these later photographs he continued to emphasise the modernist concern with the flatness of the picture plane, but intensified his approach to picture making - with close-up framing, as well as emphasis on texture, line, and visual rhymes - creating abstract images of the real world.
"We look at the world and see what we have learned to believe is there. We have been conditioned to expect.. but, as photographers, we must learn to relax our beliefs."

Accomplishments
- Siskind turned the medium of photography on its head, taking pictures of found objects that were simultaneously true-to-life and abstract; he was one of the first photographers to combine what was known as "straight" photography (recording the real world as the lens "sees" it) with abstraction.
- Siskind found emotional joy and tension in the process of discovering subjects and photographing them in such a way as to emphasise his reading of the world as essentially abstract, a series of echoing forms, lines, and textures.
- Like the Abstract Expressionists, with whom he was friends, Siskind turned away from the social/political world post-World War II, and instead looked inward to seek meaning in the mostly inanimate forms he observed around him.

In my opinion, I think that doing the research has given me an idea of what a GREAT shallow depth-of-field effect looks like. this will hopefully help me to improve and apply this to my work.

I believe this photograph is very basic due to the fact that there Is not much going on in the photo apart from the shallow depth of field effect and the bricks. However what I admire about this image is the black and white filter that has been applied. This allows you to see the magnificent contrast between the black and white colours, therefore making the texture more visible and stand out more. The shallow depth of field effect allows you to only focus on the bricks and not the background. This is done by having a soft blur in the background to dramatically increase the clean look on this photo. This overall helps me to understand how to utilise the shallow depth of field effect for me to then ingest it into my work.

Straight off when first observing I can see that the frontal area is the tree and plant. This makes an excellent difference between the Lime green plant and Dark brown of the tree. This consequently assists the green with standing and jumping out charmingly. I have recognized that they have used the rule of thirds. They have done this by making the tree stand apart at the front and blurring in the cloudy pale dim background. I would call this the sweet spot. This gives the picture a shallow depth of field effect. Within the more unnoticeably aspects of this photograph I have seen that there has been a triangular shape at the front, made by the plants and the overgrown trees. This makes the picture exceptionally fascinating and I can see it has been done cautiously. Returning to the Rule of thirds, it has likewise been done with colour. This is done by having orange in bottom two thirds and the grey background in the top third, thus having the tree foreground frames. This is a method done by picture takers and intentionally utilised here to make the photo stand apart more. Based on the lighting, I accept the image has been taken close to dawn. I'm positive of this because of the way that there is a hazy impact and typically towards the beginning of the day everything is extremely cloudy. The fundamental shades of this photograph are green, brown and orange, they have been made to look exceptionally delicate in this picture. From noticing her site, I think she has utilised different camera procedures like ISO, white balance and shutter speed. She has done this to assist with putting the picture to life. I have additionally seen that this is an outside photo, and hasn't been taken on an angle. The Reason for this is due to the fact that she needs a trimmed picture to depict an impact of you really being in the scene/photograph.

As I would see it, exploring the photo has permitted me to expand my insight on the different camera methods that I have not yet used in my work. This photograph is similar to my work because of the way that we took pictures in a western like timberland which was almost the same as the photograph. This will moreover move me to involve these various methods in my own work to profoundly work on my insight about the camera and my photography abilities.

What I appreciate in this image is its complex design. The focus of the image is everywhere which helps you to see all the textures within this photo. I really admire how the trees are placed. This helps create a persepctive effect. This therefore makes it so that the foreground is spaced from the background, elongating the image.

I believe this photograph has a fairly simple natural landscape and nothing out of the ordinary; however, I really admire the warm autumn setting which, when observed, really makes you feel happy. This photo does really well by allowing you to experience it as though you are inside the image. This is done by cropping the photo so that you can only see from a head point perspective. On the other hand what I despise about this photo is that it has really bright colours and has a high digital vibrance. This makes me feel as though the different colours are being splashed in my face to flash me in the eye. Overall this photo has made me understand that I have a lot more to learn about photography and I need to apply her knowledge into my work.
